Katahdin hair sheep were developed in the United States to be a low-maintenance, easy care sheep. They work very well in a variety of production situations and provide a practical option to producers who do not want to shear and are primarily interested in raising a meat animal with great lamb vigor and strong maternal nurturers.  Started in Maine by Michael Piel in 1950's, the breed is named for Mount Katahdin, the highest elevation in the state of Maine.
